Why Trains Still Matter for NRIs
India's rail network is one of the largest in the world, and for a lot of routes it's still the most practical way to travel — especially between cities that don't have direct flights, or when you're visiting a hometown well outside the major metros. Trains are also simply cheaper than flying for most domestic routes, and a scenic, genuinely enjoyable way to see the country if you have the time.
IRCTC: Registering & Booking from Abroad
IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) is the official train ticketing platform, and this is where most of the NRI-specific friction actually lives:
Where It Gets Stuck
- IRCTC's OTP-based booking flow is explicitly not available for international/NRI users — you'll typically see an error to that effect.
- Foreign credit/debit cards are frequently declined on IRCTC's own payment gateway, which is built around domestic Indian payment methods.
- This isn't a bug specific to you — it's a known, common experience for NRIs booking directly on IRCTC.
What Actually Works
- Third-party booking apps (see below) generally handle foreign cards and overseas mobile numbers more gracefully than IRCTC's own site.
- If you do have a family member's Indian mobile number available, IRCTC's own site becomes far more usable for OTP verification.
- Some NRIs simply have a trusted family member in India book on their behalf using IRCTC directly.

Tatkal is a last-minute booking quota released exactly one day before the train's departure — AC classes open at 10:00 AM IST, non-AC classes at 11:00 AM IST. Seats in popular routes typically sell out within minutes.
- Premium Tatkal is a dynamic-pricing variant with an even shorter window and no refund on cancellation for most fare types — it exists specifically for urgent, no-alternative travel.
- Time zones make DIY Tatkal booking genuinely hard for NRIs — 10 AM IST can be the middle of the night depending on where you live.
- Many NRIs use a travel agent, a family member in India, or a fast third-party app rather than attempting this manually across time zones.

Practical Tips for NRIs
- PNR status: Every booking gets a PNR (Passenger Name Record) number — check it on any of the apps above to confirm your seat/berth and see if a waitlisted ticket has been confirmed.
- Senior citizen concessions: Resident senior citizens get fare discounts on IRCTC; eligibility for NRIs specifically can depend on how your booking identity is set up — verify current terms directly on IRCTC rather than assuming.
- e-ticket vs. printout: A valid photo ID matching your e-ticket is usually sufficient, but keep a printed or downloaded copy as backup — some conductors still expect to see one.
- Food on board: E-catering apps (Zoop, RailRestro, and others) let you pre-order food for delivery to your seat at a specific station — often a better experience than on-train catering.
- Luggage: Keep valuables with you and use a chain/lock for larger bags overnight, especially in Sleeper class with open windows.
