Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — What It's For
A PCC is an official document certifying that you have no pending criminal cases on record in India. NRIs most commonly need one for:

Not the Same As
- A PCC issued by India only covers your record in India — most immigration processes abroad will also require a separate police clearance from your country of residence and any other countries you've lived in.
- It's not a substitute for or component of your passport renewal — they're separate applications.
How to Apply for a PCC
PCC applications for NRIs are also submitted through the Passport Seva portal, using the same login as passport services. You'll typically need to specify the exact reason for the PCC (as required by the requesting authority abroad), current passport details, and proof of your current overseas address. Processing and appointment scheduling work similarly to a passport renewal application.
Common Delays & How to Avoid Them
- Applying too close to a deadline: both passport and PCC processing can take weeks, and appointment slots at busy missions can be booked out — start well ahead of when you actually need the document.
- Mismatched address proof: ensure your overseas address documentation matches exactly what's on file, especially if you've moved recently.
- Missing the specific PCC purpose: some receiving authorities abroad require the PCC to state a specific purpose — confirm what wording they need before applying, since a generic PCC may not satisfy their requirement.
